Analog Housou Radio – The Escape
Posted On May 19, 2025
I’m not done with Tōsō (The Escape) just yet! Immediately after my first viewing of the film, I sat down with OG Analog Housou contributor and long-time friend Carter McKendry[1]He wrote one of the most popular articles on this blog!–who watched the film with me–for an off the cuff chat about it in Yoyogi Park. My delay in getting this up is mostly due to my procrastinating in setting a proper RSS feed for the podcast, but now it’s available for your listening pleasure (?).

And now, some Wikipedia links to help you if you’re lost.
- Adachi Masao – film director and political radical
- Kirishima Satoshi – the dude the film is about, who was on the run for nearly 50 years
- Japanese Red Army – hard-left armed political organization
- The East Asia Anti-Japan Armed Front – student organization that Kirishima was a part of, who carried out a series of bombings in the 1970s
- Koban – police box
- The two main actors
- Furutachi Kanji – plays older Kirishima, was in another film about a leftist radical titled My Back Page
- Sugita Rairu – plays younger Kirishima (entry is in Japanese only)
And, as a visual aid: the famous poster of Kirishima’s smiling face, which lived in the background of our daily lives for decades.
